The Treaty Of The United States - 918 Words

On April 30th, 1803, the United States doubled its land area when the Louisiana Purchase Treaty was signed making the 828,000 square miles of the Louisiana territory a part of the New World. After the exchange of $15 million to France in exchange for Louisiana, France’s influence in the United States was demolished. When the proposition of purchasing the Louisiana territory arose, Thomas Jefferson had many diverse opinions whether the addition would have a positive or negative effect on the future of the United States. French settlers laid claimed to vast amounts of North America before the French and Indian War in 1754. After the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1763, Spain received the Louisiana territory in exchange for the debt France owed for money borrowed for the previous war against the colonies. In 1802 a treaty was signed between France and Spain that to the colonies was inexistent. This treaty, the Treaty of San Ildefonso provided a peaceful trade of Louisiana back to France. When Thomas Jefferson learned of the new holder of the land and remembered past hostilities over the land, he was feared there might be an upcoming controversy especially after Napoleon Bonaparte sent in French soldier to secure New Orleans. He wanted to create a new empire in the United States. After a slave revolt in Haiti and an impending war with Britain, France abandoned those plans.
